Elsie Scully-Hicks was adopted by Matthew Scully-Hicks, 31, and his husband Craig, 36. However, this this story didn't have a nice ending. The toddler was found dead just two weeks after she was formally adopted. Before that, she suffered a series of suspicious injuries. The social services had visited the family 15 times before, but didn't raise any alarms – even after finding out that Elsie had broken her legs and "fallen down the stairs."
According to the Cardiff Crown Court, Matthew was heard shouting "shut the fuck up" at the baby in his home, as well as calling her "a psycho," "the exorcist" and "Satan dressed up in a Babygro" in text messages.
Matthew denied killing her and sobbed when the jury found him guilty after a four week trial. On the day of her death, Matthew took Elsie shopping for an outfit to celebrate her adoption with friends and family.
He even sent pictures of her outfits to his husband before buying one. However, back home, Matthew shook the toddler and threw her to the ground. This led to fatal head injuries.
Also under investigation are the social services in the Vale of Glamorgan. The official inquiry will seek to determine if their employees missed chances to save Elsie.
She had suffered a broken leg – just above her right ankle - after being in the care of the couple for only two months. She also showed bruises on her head and once rushed to the hospital after allegedly falling down the stairs - all in the next seven months.
