Vadim, a 26-year-old man from California, was brought down by a tooth infection. A truck driver on his way to New York, he took antibiotics that a doctor in Oklahoma prescribed and continued on his route.
However, by the time he reached New York, the infection had turned deadly, spreading throughout his body, filling his lungs with fluid. “We prayed for him that day,” Vadim’s wife, Nataliya, said in an interview. “It was just not healing how it was supposed to. It was just getting worse.” Vadim died shortly after, but the Kondratyuk family showed resolve in the face of tragedy.
They set up a Go Fund Me to pay for his funeral and the family’s expenses. Vadim was described as “a very humble and calm person” who “would always put others before himself.” The family detailed the huge role he played in everyone's lives. The Go Fund Me campaign was a great success as strangers flooded to support the family that had lost a loving father, husband, and brother. In the end, the Kondratyuk family received over $250,000 in donations.
Vadim’s wife and children showed their gratitude by thanking the contributors for “support during this difficult time,” adding that, “We have been blown away by the love and kindness we have been shown by our friends, family, community and even kind strangers.”
Tooth infections are pretty common and can cause serious health complications. Between 2000 and 2008, about 61,000 people were hospitalized for tooth infections. About 1 in 1,000 of those patients died. Preventative treatment is very important, yet nearly 100 million Americans do not visit a dentist every year. Tooth decay can cause tooth infections, and other conditions, like cancer or diabetes, can make them worse.
